Is it surprising to you that the San Fransisco 49ers are willing to make their new addition, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the highest paid player in the NFL? Well, it happened. According to NFL Networks Mike Garafolo, the 49ers penned a five-year, $137.5 million deal with the 26 year old quarterback.
Garoppolo, who was in the final year of his rookie contract when he was traded by the New England Patriots in October, 2017 to the 49ers for a second-round draft pick. After years of watching from the sideline, Garoppolo took over as a starter for the last five games of the year and led the 49ers to a 5-0 record over the span with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
The specific contract details were released earlier today by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Garoppolo’s total income over the first two years of the contract will be $61.2 million.
